Want to Fly to the World’s Best City? You Might Be Surprised How Far You Have to Go

If you’re planning a big getaway to escape the winter bite before it hits the north of England, or you’re just getting ahead of the game for your spring or summer trip in 2025, you might just be eyeing up an epic city getaway. The capitals of the world welcome millions of tourists every year, showcasing the most diverse and expansive experience the country has to offer.

Should you fancy topping all other experiences by going to the city ranked the very best in the world, though, you might be shocked by how far the flight is and how much it costs. From Manchester Airport, you can hop on a British Airways flight and land in an hour, costing a little over £130. Your destination, if you’re going to what Resonance ranks as the best city in the world, is London! It may be local, but apparently, you can’t beat the Big Smoke!

The champion for nine straight years

Hailed as the “capital of capitals” by the World’s Best Cities website, London holds the number one spots for culture and educational attainment, owing to its collection of free-to-the-public museums and points of interest as well as its diverse array of stores and restaurants hailing from around the world. It’s the plethora of things to do and the presence of the royal family and politics taking global headlines that help spur millions of visitors each year.

In 2023, over 18.8 million people arrived in London. According to the figures, this ranks London as the second-most visited city, only behind Istanbul in Turkey. When you combine the well-known attractions with the lesser-known ones, it’s easy to see why. Entertainment is never far away in London, whether you want to catch a world-class stage performance or play at a famous casino.

The Hippodrome is one of the most storied gambling venues in the world, sitting in the tourist magnet that is Leicester Square. It’s even expanded its offering online to become a live and Megaways casino so that anyone can go to their website and try out its top-tier collection of games from home. For some beautiful sights, tourists can ride to the top of the London Eye, visit Kew Gardens, or stroll around Tate Modern for free.

Then, there are the more hidden gems of London, just waiting to be discovered by anyone willing to pry themselves away from the likes of Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. Little Venice, Richmond Park, the beaches by Ruislip Woods, and the Porchester Spa are all ready to titillate explorers. For food, you’ll never be pressed for choice. While there’s a myriad of great independent eateries, for some real class, there are 78 Michelin-star venues here.

An alternative to Old Blighty

Of course, not everyone wants to spend their holiday in the same country they call home. Luckily, there are other rankings that, while still very complimentary of London, do rank the British capital lower. Euromonitor, which uses a slightly different ranking system, places London tenth in its end-of-year 2023 rankings. Ahead are Paris, Dubai, Madrid, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Berlin, Rome, New York, and Barcelona.

Of them all, it’s tough to overlook Madrid as an idyllic city to visit for a getaway. It offers the perfect blend of a massive range of activities and sights that you’d expect from a capital city with the enviable Spanish lifestyle, culture, and cuisine. It’s a busy city, but it’s underpinned by a desire to relax at the end of the day and have fun into the cooler hours of the night.

For many, London is the best city in the world, so if you’re eyeing up a city getaway, you can’t do much better than heading south. If you’d like a much bigger change of scenery, though, consider the Spanish or French capital.
